How to Improve your Vehicle Fuel Efficiency

20 January 2019

With gas prices continuing to rise, maximizing gas mileage is high on every driver’s list of wants and needs for their vehicle. Here’s our top tips on improving fuel economy and getting the most bang for your buck at the pump.

Inflate your tires properly
Not only does having the correct tire pressure increase the life of your tires, properly inflated tires also mean your engine doesn’t have to work as hard and use more fuel when you are driving. Check your tire pressure often (at least once a month) and make sure to rotate your tires every 6,000 to 8,000 miles (or every six months).

Refuel before fuel gets low
Over time, dirt and sediment can build up at the very bottom of your fuel tank, eventually effecting your vehicle’s gas mileage.  Refueling at no lower than a quarter (¼) tank, ensures that the “sludge” has less of a chance of compromising your fuel system or your engine.

Use a fuel additive
Regardless of which gasoline brand, octane or fuel type (E85, diesel, gas, etc.) you use, carbon deposits will eventually build up in your vehicle. These deposits can clog fuel injectors and lead to corrosion over time, causing the fuel that enters the combustion chamber to burn less efficiently. Gumout Regane Complete Fuel System Cleaner, removes the carbon deposits as well as prevents further build up, restoring your car’s performance and improving fuel efficiency after one fill-up.

Avoid Excessive Idling
This is especially important during the winter and summer months.  Idling for more than 30 seconds to one minute not only waste fuel but also increases greenhouse gases. Some older cars may need to idle more during cold weather, but you should try to avoid idling for more than a couple of minutes.

Switch to synthetic motor oil
There are lots of benefits to using synthetic oil instead of conventional motor oil.  One benefit is that tests show synthetic motor oil improves a vehicle’s gas mileage.  Other benefits include better engine performance in extremely hot or cold temperatures, and you don’t have to change your oil as often.  Be sure to check your owner’s manual or talk to a professional technician to make sure synthetic oil is best for your vehicle.

Ease the loadEase the load
The more weight you load in your car, the more fuel it uses to move.  Consider alternatives for moving big loads, especially if traveling long distances.  Also, a heavy payload is very taxing on your vehicle’s suspension system.

Use your cruise control
Use cruise control whenever possible during highway travel.  Cruise control saves fuel by keeping vehicle at a steady speed.  However, avoid using cruise control when driving uphill.
